Unique VisiLOCK® indicator system

SHARPAK has always been at the forefront in the research and development of new products to meet the demands of staff both within and outside the hospital environment.

One of the significant requirements is a clear means of indicating when the closure on the container is fully locked. SHARPAK has developed and patented a simple lock indicator system called VisiLOCK.

VisiLOCK is a simple spring-loaded button that is only actuated when the closure is turned to the 'fully' locked position. The protruding red button is clearly visible even from a distance. This feature is available on the SHARPAK 18, 35, 60, 120 and 220 containers.

HYDRI® absorbent mats

For additional safety SHARPAK also supplies HYDRI patented absorbent mats which can be placed in the base of sharps containers and sacks to soak up any free liquids. Further information on this subject can also be found in the NHS-sponsored guidance document "Safe Management of Healthcare Waste" or alternatively contact us.

Following the introduction of "UN Regulations for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods", SHARPAK Healthcare carried out a comprehensive appraisal of the issues concerning the safe disposal of sharps contaminated with Cytotoxic Drugs and Cytotoxic Waste.

It became clear that the majority of drug manufacturers do not mark their products with the appropriate packaging group classifications, thereby leaving medical staff to decide how to safely dispose of their contaminated sharps.

What's more, when different drug types are used in the clinical environment, it is a certainty that a cocktail of drugs will result, making a correct assessment of their classification even more difficult.

Our range of SHARPAK HYDRI sharps containers meet these requirements by incorporating special sorbent mats to absorb the fluids which accumulate in the bottom of sharps containers - thereby preventing spillage of the drugs or solutions from the container during its use and disposal.

The PHARMApak containers, as well as being approved for the collection and disposal of used sharps, have now also been UN type tested and approved for the collection of waste medicines in their original packagings. The UN type testing was carried out using test fills consisting of a mixture of medicines including tablets, capsules, creams, gels, powders, pastes, liquid unit dose drugs, ampoules/vials, bottles of liquid and syrups in their original packagings and needles and syringes. It is the responsibility of the consignor to record the correct UN transport classification number or European Waste Code number on to the container label e.g. UN 3249, UN 1851 and/or EWC code 18 01 09.

To obtain the correct UN classification or European Waste Code (EWC) for the waste in question, consult your Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA). These SHARPAK Code Green PhARMApak containers MUST NOT be used for the collection and disposal of any cytotoxic or cytostatic waste. For dealing with this type of healthcare waste please refer to the product data sheet which covers the SHARPAK Code Purple HYDRI range of sharps containers.
